Old trees are vital
Papuan hornbills need old trees with large cavities for nesting. Since it takes decades for natural cavities to form, they rely on old-growth forests. However, deforestation is causing many of these forests to disappear, and with them vital nesting sites.

Masters of the treetops
Papuan hornbills spend their lives high up in the rainforest canopy. In search of food, they fly long distances to fruit-bearing trees.
Noisy forest dwellers
The Papuan hornbills signal their presence in the rainforest with deep calls that carry over long distances. If you listen carefully, you can also hear the whooshing of the wing beats before you spot them among the treetops.
The Papuan hornbill’s casque is hollow and lighter than it appears. It is thought to be used for communication and mate selection.
