The Bavarian pine vole was first dis-covered in 1962 near Garmisch-Parten-kirchen. The newly identified species was not sighted again for decades and presumed extinct. It was only redis-covered in 2023 near Mittenwald. The disappearance was likely due to human activity in its native habitat. It is one of the world’s rarest mammals.
