Stadtsparkasse München (SSKM) is supporting Hellabrunn Zoo with a generous donation of 100,000 euros. With this support, Hellabrunn’s long-standing partner is enabling the redesign of the enclosure for the Przewalski’s horses. This will improve the conditions for breeding these endangered wild horses and lay the foundations for Hellabrunn to provide its own offspring for international reintroduction projects in future.
The Hellabrunn Przewalski’s horses will soon be moving to the newly designed enclosure next to the domestic yaks. Until now, the Przewalski’s horses have shared their enclosure with the Bactrian camels. However, as it was not possible to breed both species in this shared enclosure, Hellabrunn Zoo has set up a dedicated enclosure for the Przewalski’s horses. The future Przewalski’s horse enclosure will therefore facilitate the further development of the breeding group as part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP).
“As Stadtsparkasse München, we have close ties to our city and its people. We take responsibility and support projects that are important to the people of Munich. Hellabrunn Zoo has been one of these for many years. With our donation, we are making the enclosure for the Przewalski’s horses at Hellabrunn possible. This helps to strengthen the zoo as a place for nature, education and recreation,” explains Jan Mersmann, a member of the board of Stadtsparkasse München.
The Przewalski’s horse is considered the last remaining true wild horse species. After the species was threatened with extinction in the 1960s, it was saved through internationally co-ordinated conservation breeding programmes run by zoological institutions. Hellabrunn has also been involved in breeding these special horses for many decades. A new breeding group has been established at the zoo since 2025. In June 2026, the first Przewalski foal in ten years was born at Hellabrunn – a significant success for the zoo’s breeding programme.
“We would like to express our sincere thanks to Stadtsparkasse München for this generous support and for its commitment to our zoo, which has spanned over 50 years. The redesign of the Przewalski’s horse enclosure is an important step for Hellabrunn. The fact that we can count on such a long-standing and reliable partner is of great significance to us,” says Rasem Baban, Director of Hellabrunn Zoo.
In future, visitors will be able to observe the Przewalski’s horses in the newly designed enclosure between the Hellabrunn Arena and Mühlendorf and learn more about this endangered species of wild horse.
