New female giraffe arrives at Hellabrunn Zoo

On 4 September, a two-year-old female reticulated giraffe called Taziyah arrived at Hellabrunn Zoo from Brno Zoo in the Czech Republic. Taziyah’s new home will be the Giraffe Savannah at Hellabrunn Zoo.

Hellabrunn now has four reticulated giraffes living at the zoo: Taziyah, the newest arrival, was born on 12 June 2013 in Brno Zoo in the Czech Republic. The young female giraffe had to leave her group as she is now approaching sexual maturity. She travelled to Munich in a custom-built vehicle. The journey went without a hitch and Taziyah entered the barn in her new home without hesitation.

After giving her a few days to settle in and get used to her new surroundings, she finally had an opportunity to meet her new companions Limber and Bahati on 7 September. Giraffe females tend to get along well with each other. And as expected, the first meeting between Limber, Bahati and Taziyah went without problem. In fact, the very next day, the three were able to roam together in the enclosure, where the trio were on view for visitors to see.

"With Taziyah we are taking the next step towards an exclusively female group at Hellabrunn" says zoo director Rasem Baban. In the long term, it is hoped that up to eight female giraffes will live in the African Giraffe Savannah at Hellabrunn Zoo. Naledi, the young giraffe bull and brother of Limber, will move to another zoo recommended by the European Endangered Species Programme EEP for reticulated giraffes this year.

The restructuring to an all-female group will allow Hellabrunn to make an important contribution for the European Endangered Species Programme. At present, there are a large number of giraffes in European zoos. In the event of new births, this makes it difficult to transfer the juvenile calves to other zoos. The group for young female giraffes at Hellabrunn Zoo provides an excellent solution by offering a home for offspring from other European zoos.
