Hellabrunn Zoo in the Top 10 most popular tourist attractions

In a survey of the most popular tourist attractions in Germany, foreign visitors ranked Hellabrunn Zoo 9th in the Top 100. The survey also revealed that Hellabrunn remains the number one attraction in Greater Munich and the third most popular in Bavaria after Neuschwanstein Castle and Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

"We’re incredibly pleased that Hellabrunn has climbed from 23rd place last year up to 9th. This excellent ranking is a great compliment to our zoo," says zoo director Rasem Baban. With its idyllic location in a nature reserve on the banks of the Isar river, Hellabrunn Zoo is now officially one of the Top Ten tourist attractions in Germany. The zoo is open seven days a week to visitors, who are invited to venture on a journey through the 40-hectare nature paradise with over 750 different species. Hellabrunn is a particularly attractive destination for families as it offers plenty of adventure for a day trip all year round. "Visitors can look forward to a new attraction at the zoo, which opens on 8th September," adds Baban. With the completion of the second construction phase of the Polar World, Hellabrunn has achieved another milestone in the implementation of the Master Plan. The renovated Polar World is the first completed geozone of the zoo according to the geozoo concept. In addition to polar bears, penguins and South American sea lions, the new Polar World will also be home to snow owls, Arctic fox and mountain hare.

The survey was conducted by the German National Tourist Board (GNTB) and aimed exclusively at foreign visitors, who were able to vote for their most popular attraction via the website www.germany.travel. The GNTB conducted the survey so that tourists were able to answer questions about the highlights of their holiday in Germany anonymously. Nearly 32,000 holidaymakers from 60 countries took part in the survey between September 2016 and June 2017. The Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg was voted the number one attraction nationwide.

The Top 100 includes a wide variety of tourist attractions, ranging from famous buildings to historical sites and natural landscapes, to sports centres and recreational parks. Major events are also included in the Top 100. Further information on the Top 100 attractions in Germany is available at www.germany.travel/top100.
