Wildly creative: Drawing classes at Hellabrunn Zoo
Hellabrunn Zoo offers a drawing workshop for creative amateur artists on a regular basis. The four-hour workshop is led by the Illustrator Paschalis Dougalis who imparts his know-how with a sketchbook and explains both the practical and theoretical aspects of animal drawing.
When asked what he finds most exciting about his passion, Paschalis Dougalis responds with a smile: "With a drawing you can make a plain blank sheet of paper come alive – that's fascinating!" The 46-year-old native Greek has been drawing for as long as he can remember. Even as a young boy, he was able to sketch animals in exact detail, which naturally impressed his family. He now works as a professional book illustrator and recently created around 300 illustrations for a single book, which took two years to complete. Throughout his career, he has sketched numerous illustrations for zoology books, including of animals that are already extinct, such as the giant elk and passenger pigeon. "Drawing an animal in motion with all its facets is a challenge I always relish," adds Dougalis. "That's why I love visiting Hellabrunn Zoo." Equipped with a pair of binoculars, a stool and his sketchbook, he sets to work. "I usually look for animals that have complicated patterns or an unusual shape. If, for example, I would like to draw a zebra in exact detail, I need a bit more time and patience." says Dougalis.
Paschalis Dougalis knows all about the variety of motifs available at Hellabrunn and regularly shares his know-how with the participants of his drawing workshop. Amateur artists attending the four-hour workshop will be taught a whole raft of tips and tricks on animal drawing. For example: What do I need to do to ensure the proportions are correct when making such drawings? How can I capture a special moment? And what should I pay special attention to regarding composition? During the workshop, Paschalis Dougalis takes his participants to three or four stations, where he shows how to create a first sketch study and then how to refine this into a detailed drawing. He remains with the participants during the practical exercises to provide help and advice. The workshop is designed for participants over 16 who already possess basic knowledge of drawing.
Registration for the drawing workshop can be submitted at the zoo's Service Center, or via phone or email.
