"With our Discovery Cave, we would like to offer an opportunity to experience selected species as part of our guided tours and educational workshops, as well as raise awareness for dealing with these supposedly terrifying creatures," says zoo director Rasem Baban, surrounded by terrariums with snakes, lizards, insects and spiders. The cave situated inside the hill in the Jungle World was designed with a nature-inspired artificial rock interior to create an authentic cave environment and invites tour and educational workshop participants to enjoy close encounters with the animals. The residents of the Discovery Cave are cared for by the zoo's aquarium trainees, who provide assistance both in the aquarium and terrariums at Hellabrunn. The trainee keepers working in the Discovery Cave learn to care for the animals living in the terrariums, which includes how to simulate a desert climate or the tropical rainforest. Curator Frank Müller uses the Discovery Cave to provide optimal training for his team: "The Discovery Cave is a training location where our apprentices can learn different techniques from the aquarium and terrariums. Feeding the pythons can be just as challenging as preparing the right combination of fresh, salty and brackish water."

For those who get queasy in the presence of snakes or spiders, Hellabrunn offers a workshop that helps you overcome your phobia. Ursula Riedinger (Service Center employee, trained zookeeper, naturopath for psychotherapy and therapist for Animal Assisted Therapy) runs a workshop on coping with spider or snake phobia several times a year. In her workshop, she applies various methods of behavioural and talking therapy, relaxation techniques as well as techniques for building up resources. Under professional supervision, phobia sufferers will gradually learn to overcome their fear of the unknown and have an opportunity to get close to the snake Houdini or the spider Anna.

The Discovery Cave can only be visited on guided tours, children's birthday parties or educational workshops. For more information on educational workshops and guided tours at Hellabrunn Zoo please click here
