Since the birth 17 days ago, the newborn cub is getting bigger and more active with each passing day. Giovanna has been caring for her little one with much love and always cuddles it close her body to keep it warm. Although the cub is not yet able to see, from time to time visitors will be able to observe its first crawling attempts. "Polar bear cubs are not able to see until about four weeks after birth," says zoo curator Beatrix Köhler. "Their sense of hearing and smell also begin to unfold around this time." The cub’s development so far is good. It drinks regularly and is in good health. However the sex of the young animal cannot yet be determined with absolute certainty. "But I already have a hunch," smiles Beatrix Köhler.

From Thursday, 8 December, all visitors to Hellabrunn Zoo are now able to observe the activities of the mum and her cub in the mothering den via a large monitor in the Species Conservation Center, and see how well Giovanna masters her role as a caring mum. The monitor is located in the exhibition room of the Climate Factor – Man exhibition.

Giovanna and her newborn cub are expected to emerge from the mothering den for the first time around the end of February. Although dad Yoghi was temporarily transferred to Wilhelma Zoo in Stuttgart after the birth of the parents’ previous cubs, the polar bear twins, Nela and Nobby, this time he will stay at the Hellabrunn Zoo. However it may take some time before he has his first contact with his youngest offspring through the cuddling grid. Like in the wild, the task of raising the cub will be solely managed by the mum.
