The Elephant House will finally reopen on the last weekend of October. For visitors, it will be the first time they have had an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the interior of the historic building since the extensive restoration project began. Originally built more than 100 years ago by the architect Emanuel von Seidl, the landmark of the zoo now shines in a new splendour thanks to a high degree of planning, construction and financial commitment.

The Elephant House will be open to visitors after the official opening by zoo director Rasem Baban and Mayor Christine Strobl, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Munich Tierpark Hellabrunn AG, on Friday, 28 October, from ca. 2:00 pm.

On Saturday and Sunday, 29 - 30 October, the opening will be marked with an exciting programme of events in and around the new Elephant House celebrating the Asian pachyderms. On both days, visitors will be able to learn more about the history of Hellabrunn’s Elephant House and its Asian residents via a photography exhibition, various film screenings and a mobile info stand for elephants. There will also be many entertaining events for children such as craft activities, face painting and a quiz rally.

Special highlights of the weekend include talks with zookeepers as well as architects and exhibition planners, a temple dance, a reading by children's author Diana Hillebrand from the book "Paula, The Zoo Reporter" as well as a panel discussion with curator Beatrix Köhler. In addition, elephant keeper and filmmaker Felix Heidinger will show his film “Asia’s Big Five - The Elephant”.

The four elephant cows Temi, Mangala, Panang and Steffi have already been living in the renovated Elephant House since early August 2016. In their new home, they will be able to take advantage of all the excellent indoor facilities, including the spacious swimming pool.
