Hellabrunn Zoo welcomes its millionth visitor - a few weeks earlier than last year
5 July: Mayor and Hellabrunn chairman Christine Strobl and zoo director Rasem Baban had just finished a press conference on the successful fiscal year 2015 when the Deputy Head of Sales informed the press office that the millionth visitor has just passed through the zoo gates.
An unsuspecting Johanna Gumberger and her family got quite a surprise as they approached the Isar entrance of the zoo shortly after 11 am. They were immediately greeted by the ticket office staff: "Welcome to Hellabrunn! You are our millionth visitor this year! And since you are our guests of honour today, you don’t have to pay any entrance fee ". The family were then lead to the giraffe enclosure where, to mark the occasion, they had their picture taken with the chairman Christine Strobl and zoo director Rasem Baban.
"Mrs Gumberger and her family were not the only ones who were surprised. I actually came to the zoo today for a completely different event, so I too was surprised by the news," says Christine Strobl of the serendipitous coincidence. "But I was delighted to have the pleasure of been able to congratulate the guests of honour. I noticed they could hardly believe their luck. The fact that we have already welcomed the millionth visitor to Hellabrunn at the beginning of July is a good indication that we may once again break the two million mark this year. As we reported in the press conference earlier today, Hellabrunn welcomed 2,089,983 visitors last year, the second best result since its founding 105 years ago.
Mum and Dad Gumberger with little Anna (1 year) and her older brother Johannes (4 years) had a wonderful morning on their first excursion together to the zoo. They travelled to the city from Eching near Landshut. All the greater was the surprise when they were personally greeted by Munich Mayor Christine Strobl and zoo director Rasem Baban and presented with a bouquet of flowers and a Hellabrunn Zoo annual pass for the whole family.
