Last Sunday, Hellabrunn Zoo invited all "godparents" of animals at the zoo to its annual Adopt an Animal day. Apart from the opportunity to get together, the sponsors gained an interesting insight into the behind-the-scenes work of the zookeepers, which included an exclusive tour of the new Elephant House.

Hellabrunn Zoo currently has more than 250 animal sponsors who help to support the zoological park in Munich maintain a high standard of animal welfare. As a gesture of gratitude, the sponsors are invited to the zoo’s Adopt an Animal Day each year. This year the sponsors were able to attend talks presented by the keepers for five different animals, enter a competition for great prizes and enjoy an exclusive tour of the new Elephant House. In addition, all the sponsors were given the opportunity to show off their creative skills: the friends of the zoo were invited to draw on a large wall showing the upcoming Mühlendorf village, creating a colourful design.

With their commitment, the sponsors not only forge a special bond between an animal or species, but also support the welfare of the said species in a nature-inspired environment at Hellabrunn Zoo. "The commitment of our sponsors supports both the care and feeding of the residents at the zoo, as well as the protection of endangered animals in their natural habitat", explains zoo director Rasem Baban. "Many of our visitors purchase an Adopt an Animal package as a special gift. After all, how many people can say that their 'godchild' is a dwarf crocodile or a silvery gibbon?"

The zoo currently offers exclusive Adopt an Animal packages for orangutans, gibbons, king penguins, dwarf crocodiles, South American sea lions and the Siberian tiger Jegor. There are also many other animals such as birds, smaller rodents and fish, which also look forward to a sponsor.

Adopt an Animal packages at Hellabrunn Zoo are available from € 99 per year. For more information on animal sponsorship, please ask a member of staff at our Service Centres or visit our website http://www.hellabrunn.de/en/support-the-zoo/adopt-an-animal/
