Highly Endangered Cat Species
There are only around 500 Siberian tigers living in the wild. Poachers hunt the largest living cat in the world for its fur. The claws and bones are also prized as they are ascribed healing powers in Chinese medicine. Hellabrunn is participating in the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) for Siberian tigers to ensure the preservation of the species.
Hissing as a Defensive Strategy
When a tiger opens its mouth and hisses, he’s warning his opponent in an attempt to prevent a fight.
Not Afraid of Water
The Siberian tiger disproves the rule that cats dislike water. It is a very good swimmer and loves to bathe.
Tigers prick their ears and swivel them forward in order to be able to concentrate fully on their prey and not to miss the slightest noise.
