Short-eared elephant shrew
deserts and semi-deserts in western South Africa
Short-eared elephant shrews live in shrub land and rocky mountain areas. In order to be able to quickly escape from danger they dig lots of exit routes from their homes. They know their way around the labyrinth, but their attackers don’t.
Elephant shrews detect food with their long, trunk-like noses that give the species its name. Amongst other things they eat insects, roots and berries.
