Navigation Experts

The name of this species of bat refers to the leaflike structure on its nose. This is a useful piece of equipment - it sends out ultrasound waves which allow the bat to get its bearings using echo location. Seba’s short-tailed bats can therefore navigate effectively in complete darkness.

Social Cave Dwellers

Seba’s short-tailed bats eat plants and have flattened back teeth in contrast to insect-eating bat species which have pointed teeth. They live in tree hollows and caves, often in large groups of up to 100 members.
