GEOGRAPHIC RANGE

Their Home

The red fody is the most common bird on the island of Madagascar off the east coast of Africa. It lives in savannahs, thorn bushes and towns but avoids dense woodland.

A Man with Two Faces

The male red fody has orange or yellow plumage. However in the breeding season he is hardly recognisable as his feathers turn a splendid, luminous red colour. The females have olive-brown feathers and look similar to a sparrow.

High Rise Builders

The red fody builds nests in tall grasses or bushes but also in trees up to a height of about eight metres.
