GEOGRAPHIC RANGE

Their Home

Cuban hutias live in woody mountains and coastal regions on the Caribbean island of Cuba. In northern Cuba they live and even sleep in trees; in the south they live on the ground and in holes in rocks.

Animal Networking

Active by day, these very social rodents live in pairs or small family groups. Reciprocal grooming is one of their distinctive social behaviours. Cuban hutias have a wide range of whistles and sounds used to give warnings and to convey how they are to each other. Cuban hutias have very strong claws and are therefore very good at climbing and digging.
